Lany came to New Zealand after teaching in university for 8 years in China, having obtained a BA in English and a MA in Linguistics, along with a Postgraduate Diploma in Disability and Inclusion Education (Waikato).

Having joined the team at Nigel Tate Financial Planning Ltd. in 2016 and became a shareholder in 2021, Lany completed Massey Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Personal Financial Planning) and holds a New Zealand Certificate of Financial Services specialising in personal risk management, residential property lending and investment. She is currently undergoing Certified Financial Planner's supervision period.
