Oliver was born and raised in Southland, attended Central Southland College, Lincoln University in Christchurch, and Auckland and Massey Universities in Auckland.
After traveling extensively through America, Europe, and Africa, Oliver returned to New Zealand in early 1990 and set up his base in Auckland. Oliver is married and has three university and school-aged children.
